What Have We Done?
The most important question anyone can ask a nonprofit organization is, What
have you accomplished? We are proud of our record of achievement in protecting
the Sound since our founding in 1987, and here are some highlights.
We take action to stop polluters and preserve the Sound
We have successfully sued to reduce the hazardous waste escaping from
sewage treatment facilities in Norwalk, Bridgeport, Stratford, and Greenwich.
We stopped irresponsible sandblasting of lead paint from watershed bridges
forcing adoption of containment procedures.
We play a vital role in the ongoing restoration of the states public
shellfish beds. In the past six years over 3,000 acres have been restored.
We seek visibility and we create awareness
We wrote and distributed 15,000 "Soundkeeper's Clean Boaters Guide".
We published and distributed 20,000 copies of the SoundBook, an informative
citizens guide to Long Island Sound and the watershed.
We published and distributed 10,000 copies of Super KeeperKids Challenge
Megablob: A Long Island Sound Activities and Coloring Book to kids around Long
Island Sound.
We annually mail tens of thousands of informational brochures and environmental
tip sheets related to Long Island Sound.
We maintain an ongoing presence in media outlets ranging from the Stamford
Advocate and the New York Times to Channel 12 News.
We work with people to achieve common goals
We built coalitions of trade unions, environmentalists and industry
to upgrade outdated sewage and wastewater treatment infrastructure throughout
the greater metropolitan region.
Through our Steward Network, we work with local organizations from the
Bronx and Oyster Bay to New Haven and Bridgeport to develop responses to environmentally-related
public health problems affecting communities.
To address pollution issues, we work with government agencies ranging
from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Connecticut Department of Environmental
Protection to the Department of Agriculture and the United States Coast Guard.
